CHICAGO, 19 July 2012. Today, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs hosted a breakfast featuring former Australian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, the Hon. Kevin Rudd, MP.

Mr. Rudd has an extensive experience, history and background in China, and remains the only fluent Chinese-speaking national leader outside of ethnic Chinese nations.

It was good to see a friendly face and old supporter of Illuminant here in Chicago. We have not seen Mr. Rudd since April 2008, when as Australian prime minister, he graciously agreed to support Illuminant and help launch our client SmartTran’s Olympic transportation technology in Beijing.  We’re still very proud that Mr. Rudd’s appearance for Illuminant was the sole commercial endorsement he made during his first visit to China as the Australian leader. (YouTube CCTV report on Mr. Rudd’s appearance)

At this morning’s event in Chicago (which we’re grateful for the opportunity to attend), Mr. Rudd spoke initially on the on the US – Australian relationship. The minister declared the bilateral relationship as  ”strong”, with a shared interest in free trade, and over US$38 billion in trading and almost US$2 trillion in mutual investment. Mr. Rudd highlighted a the foundations of the healthy trade relationship as similar guiding principles and each with a vibrant democracy. Australia is the world’s 12th largest economy and the 4th largest in Asia,  and is proudly independent.

Mr. Rudd also shared his insight on China in which he pointed to a shift from a western-dominated global economy to that of an Asian-centric world. He emphasized the importance to manage a peaceful rise of China over the coming years, saying “it will require sustained intellectual effort, unprecedented diplomacy and great statesmanship from us all.” China’s growth over the near term will, for the first time since George III, said Mr. Rudd, present a non-western, non-democratic state as the world’s largest economy.

China’s leadership has many challenges and their “in-box remains full”, according to Mr. Rudd. We agree with the minister that China’s rise as a people, a nation and a friend will provide challenges for the west if we fail to understand, interpret and view the world through their eyes.

Illuminant’s presence and start in China in 2003 has served us well, but the China Road rarely presents an easy journey. As an award-winning China-specialist agency, we help our clients in the public and private sectors to provide the insight to achieve their objectives and to succeed in China.

Illuminant Partners has proudly supported the China-side government relations and public relations of the Authority since 2004.

The NSW Food Authority is a State Government agency established in April 2004 to provide New South Wales with the best food regulation system in Australia. The Food Authority was formed by merging SafeFood NSW with the food regulatory activities of NSW Health. As Australia’s first completely integrated or “through-chain” food regulation agency, the NSW Food Authority is responsible for food safety across the entire food industry, from primary production to point-of-sale.

Before the Authority was established, responsibility for food regulation in NSW was divided across a number of State agencies. The establishment of the NSW Food Authority will create a more streamlined, consistent and efficient approach to food regulation in NSW and a single point of contact for both the industry and public. The Authority will work with local government to better define and support their continuing role in food regulation.

The Authority also controls Milk Marketing (NSW) Pty Limited and Pacific Industry Services Corporation Pty Limited.

Illuminant sponsors Beijing’s Australian Ball, 2008

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

It is no secret that Illuminant Partners is closely aligned with the Australian business community in China. While we have team-members with a wonderful diversity of ethnic and cultural heritages, our Chief Exec is an Australian, and he has brought a lot of Australian corporate clients onto our roster.

Our involvement with Australian businesses operating in China and Hong Kong is not the last word in our Australian roots: we also work very closely with the various departments of the Australian Embassy in Beijing (primarily,Austrade and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade), and our Chief Exec serves as deputy chairman of theAustralian Chamber of Commerce in Beijing.

This week, we are proud to further demonstrate our support for Australian business interests in China, by our sponsorship of the Australian Ball, to be held at Beijing’s China World Hotel on Australian national day, January 26, 2008.

We’re a “bronze” sponsor, and by coincidence, our two fellow bronze sponsors are good friends of Illuminant’s: Woods Bagot is an important client of ours, and GNS is our corporate advisory firm.

We decided to provide sponsorship for this flagship event in the Beijing expatriate calendar because (a) it is a demonstration of good corporate citizenship, (b) we want to put our money where our mouth is, and (c) sponsorship will expose our brand to a great many influential business people, both clients and prospects. Since we entered our “fast growth” period four months ago, the added profile for Illuminant will (hopefully) support our business development objectives.

Tickets went on sale from the Austcham secretariat in Beijing on Tuesday this week. Last year, they sold out in only three days — they’re a hot property!
